A road cordon remains in place after a person was critically injured during an assault in South Taranaki overnight.
Police were called to Ihaia Rd in the coastal town of Ōpunake at around 10.15pm following a report that "a person had been seriously assaulted".
The victim was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
Cordons remain in place while police determine the "circumstances of the assault".
Ihaia Rd was expected to remain closed for several hours, and the public have been urged to avoid the area.
A spokesperson for St John said it deployed two helicopters, two ambulances, one first response unit, and one rapid response unit.
