A tramper has been found alive in a hut in Kahurangi National Park after almost three weeks missing and days after police called off the search.
Graham Garnett, 66, failed to return from a solo tramp in the Baton/Ellis River area on December 30, triggering a major search operation across some of the park’s most rugged terrain.
A Defence Force NH90 helicopter, specialist radar technology and multiple Land Search and Rescue teams were deployed, with efforts focused on spurs and large water systems running off the Wharepapa/Arthur Range.
Parts of the Baton Valley – including the Wilkinson Track, Baton Saddle and sections of the Wharepapa/Arthur Range – were temporarily closed during the extensive operation.

After weeks of searching, police suspended the operation on Thursday when no sign of Garnett was found.
Garnett was found in Venus Hut by contractors working in the area around 2.30pm today, Sergeant Jonny Evans confirmed to 1News.
He was taken to Nelson Hospital where he has been reunited with his family.
"This is an amazing result. We are so pleased for Graham and his loved ones," Evans said.
"Obviously he has been through quite an ordeal and everyone involved in the search is delighted to hear that Graham has been found alive."
Garnett's family asked for privacy at this time.
