Person dies after serious crash in Whakatāne

A person has died and another remains in hospital after a single-vehicle crash in Whakatāne yesterday afternoon.

Police confirmed the death today, a day after emergency services were called to Tahuna Road, between Secombe and Jackson roads in Te Teko, around 3.40pm.

A second person remains in hospital in a serious condition after the single-vehicle crash.

The car left the road during the crash, police said yesterday.

Hato Hone St John had treated one patient in a critical condition at the scene, who was airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

Tahuna Rd was closed while the serious crash unit examined the scene and has since reopened. Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
