A boy is fighting for his life after being attacked by a shark at a popular Sydney beach.

Emergency services were called to Vaucluse in the city's east to reports of a shark attack about 4.20pm on Sunday.

The boy, believed to be aged about 12, was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and other first responders at the scene for serious leg injuries, police said.

He was then transported by road in critical condition to Sydney Children's Hospital, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.

The incident happened near Nielsen Park and Shark Beach, a popular swimming spot for families with a netted area in Sydney Harbour.

The beach has been closed and swimmers have been advised to avoid going in the water.
