State Highway 1 north of Ōamaru has reopened after a truck fire spread into nearby vegetation this morning.

Fire and Emergency NZ were called shortly after 10am on Saturday to a truck ablaze, with flames extending into trees.

"Five crews attended − two from Ōamaru, two from Waitaki and one from Weston," a spokesperson said.

The fire had been brought under control, with crews on site to dampen down hotspots.

Video from the scene provided to 1News showed crews working to bring the fire under control as smoke drifted across the highway.

NZTA said a section of SH1 was temporarily closed due to the vehicle fire but has since reopened.

"State Highway 1 is open between the Redcastle Rd and Orbell Rd intersections with traffic management in place. Expect delays as congestion eases."
