Five injured after fleeing driver crashes into parked car in Gisborne

Damage to a parked car on Gladstone Rd after a two-vehicle crash on Friday night.

Five people have been injured after a speeding car which fled police crashed into a parked car in Gisborne last night.

Police signalled a vehicle to stop after it was seen speeding on Gladstone Rd at around 10.30pm on Friday, but the driver failed to stop.

Acting Inspector Bryan Smith said the pursuit of the vehicle was abandoned after a short time.

"Officers carrying out area patrols then found the fleeing car had crashed into a parked vehicle near the intersection of Gladstone Rd and Abbott St."

A St John spokesperson said two ambulances responded to the crash.

"Our ambulance crews assessed and treated five patients at the scene and transported them to Gisborne Hospital. Three patients were in a moderate condition and two were in a minor condition."

The 18-year-old driver was arrested for breach of bail, recklessly causing injury, and failing to stop for police when signalled.

He was due to appear in Gisborne District Court today, with inquiries into the incident ongoing.
