New Zealand Olympians will be vying for more than just glory at the two upcoming games — they'll now also receive monetary bonuses for bringing home the bling.
For individual events (deemed to be four or fewer athletes), the prizes would be $5000 per athlete for gold, $3000 for silver and $2000 for bronze.
For team events (deemed to be five or more athletes), the prizes would be $25,000 per team for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze.
The money was offered by official apparel partner Kathmandu, in addition to sponsorship and provision of uniforms for the New Zealand Team.
The bonus structure has been developed in consultation with the NZOC Athletes' Commission.
NZOC Athletes' Commission chairperson Richie Patterson said the Commission had enjoyed developing and testing different medal bonus methodologies.
"This is awesome for our Olympic athletes and I’m proud we’re able to help bring this tangible reward to life," said Patterson.
NZOC chief executive Nicki Nicol said it was a nice reward, and another way for athletes to be recognised "for all their hard work and dedication".
"I think it’s a nice reward; every one of our athletes goes out there and wears the fern with pride aiming to achieve the very best. For those who do get on the podium, whether at Milano Cortina or Los Angeles, this medal bonus is a great way to say thank you,” she said.
Kathmandu chief executive Megan Welch said she was "proud to give Kiwis another way to celebrate our top Olympians and can’t wait to watch these medal moments play out on the world stage".
The Winter Olympics begin early next month.
