Watch: Small tornado touches down in Waikato farmland

A small tornado has made touchdown in Waikato as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through the region.

Footage supplied to 1News showed the phenomenon spinning with dark clouds overhead in farmland at Maihiihi.

MetService issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Waikato, Matamata Piako, Western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua from 3.30pm to 4.30pm today.

1News weather Dan Corbett said: "It is a tornado – a very small, very brief tornado that had a touchdown.

"It’s really cool. All the cloud above it is spinning too.

"It hits the ground then gravity pulls it back up like a vacuum cleaner hose.”

MetService issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 8pm on Thursday for Waitomo, Taupō, Ruapehu and Ōtorohanga.
