Two people have died and a third person was injured following a two-car crash on State Highway 30 near Rotorua this morning.
Emergency services including St John, Fire and Emergency New Zealand and police were called to the crash near Tikitere, involving two cars, shortly after 4am.
A Police spokesperson confirmed to 1News that two people died at the scene of the crash, and one other was injured.
Hato Hone St John said it sent three ambulances to the scene.
"One patient was transported to Rotorua Hospital in a moderate condition," a St John spokesperson said.
Police said diversions were in place at the intersections of State Highway 30/State Highway 33 and State Highway 30/Matahi Rd.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the serious crash unit was investigating.
Motorists were asked to follow diversions and expect delays.
