A section of State Highway 30 in the Bay of Plenty is closed this morning following a serious crash.

The crash, involving two cars, was reported to police shortly after 4am.

"Diversions are in place at the intersections of State Highway 30/State Highway 33 and State Highway 30/Matahi Rd," a police spokesperson said.

At this stage, police were unable to confirm information regarding injuries to those involved.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John have been contacted for comment.
