Police car involved in two-vehicle crash near Tīrau

A police car and a member of the public’s vehicle collided near Tīrau yesterday afternoon, leaving both drivers with minor injuries and causing significant disruption on State Highway 1.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash at Piarere shortly after 3.15pm on Wednesday.

Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said each vehicle had only one occupant, and both were assessed by ambulance staff at the scene.

"Both vehicles received extensive damage, and the northbound lane was blocked," he said.

"The serious crash unit has conducted an examination."

Footage provided to 1News shows multiple emergency crews responding, with debris scattered across the highway and traffic backed up as the scene was cleared.
