Pair charged after AK-47-style firearm found in Auckland property

Two people have been charged after police found a loaded semi-automatic AK-47-style firearm in a room under a property in South Auckland.

Around 5.40pm on Wednesday, police spotted a vehicle of interest on Puhinui Rd in Manukau.

The vehicle fled after noticing police but was not pursued.

Inspector Mohammed Atiq said the Eagle helicopter found the vehicle on Redoubt Rd and police cordoned off the address.

A police dog unit tracked a person to a room beneath the house, where a search uncovered a "fully loaded semi-automatic AK-47 style firearm in a cupboard as well as several parts of a shotgun".

Two people at the address was taken into custody.

A 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were due to appear in the Manukau District Court today on multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm.
