Netball NZ appoints interim CEO, new Silver Ferns performance lead

Jane Patterson will step into the role as Interim Chief Executive on January 19.

Netball New Zealand has announced two major appointments to its leadership team today, as the organisation looks to steady the ship ahead of a major year ahead which includes the Commonwealth Games in July.

Jane Patterson will step into the role of interim chief executive from January 19, while high performance specialist Chelsea Lane has been appointed head of performance for the Silver Ferns.

The appointments come after former CEO Jenny Wyllie resigned from her role in December, ending a 16-year tenure with the organisation.

Patterson brings more than 30 years' experience across sport and major events in New Zealand and internationally, most recently serving as New Zealand's chief operating officer for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023.

She has been recognised for her contribution sport administration, being appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in 2016, and later an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in 2023.

Patterson said her immediate priority would be providing clarity and support across the organisation.

"Since first playing netball at the age of seven, I’ve carried a deep respect for the game and its proud place in New Zealand sport," Patterson said.

"Stepping into this role comes with a real sense of responsibility, and I’m committed to working alongside our staff to ensure the organisation remains strong, united, and focused for the future,"

Alongside Patterson's appointment, the organisation confirmed Lane would take up the newly created role of Head of Performance - Silver Ferns.

Lane brings more than 20 years' experience in sport to the organisation, including senior roles with NBA franchises and national sporting bodies.

Her appointment comes after a challenging 2025 for the Silver Ferns, which included public scrutiny of team culture and performance, as well as tensions between players and coaching staff that placed head coach Dame Noeline Taurua under pressure.

Dame Noeline was controversially stood down from her role as Silver Ferns coach in September, with Yvette McCausland-Durie stepping in as interim head coach until Dame Noeline was later reinstated.

Dame Noeline welcome Lane's arrival to the team, saying she was "looking forward to working with her closely".

"Chelsea’s ability to align performance, people and culture will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the Silver Ferns programme," she said.

Netball NZ chair Matt Whineray said the leadership changes would allow the organisation to stay focused during an important year.

"We have a significant season ahead, particularly with the Commonwealth Games in July. These appointments ensure our players, staff and communities feel supported as we deliver our key priorities," he said.

Netball New Zealand said further decisions around permanent leadership roles would be made later in the year.
