Arrest after bus driver sprayed with fire extinguisher in Auckland

Pregnant public transport user Sarah said while some drivers waited for her to be fully seated, others did not.

A man has been arrested after he allegedly sprayed a bus driver with a fire extinguisher in Auckland's Mount Eden earlier this week.

The victim was driving the 27H route when a verbally aggressive passenger sprayed her with the device just after 6pm on Tuesday, Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Darvill said.

"The driver avoided any significant effects, but she was understandably shaken by what occurred."

The man, who had been last seen walking along Mt Eden Rd, was arrested late last night, Darvill added.

A 32-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court charged with assault with a weapon and endangering transport.

Auckland Transport told 1News on Wednesday that incidents involving "violent, threatening and antisocial behaviour on Auckland’s public transport network are rare but are totally unacceptable".

A spokesperson said incidents on the city's public transport services were a "symptom of broader challenges our society is grappling with".

"We can’t address these issues in isolation – to make public transport safer we also have to make our homes, communities and streets safer.

"AT is continuing to work closely with Auckland Council, police and other Government agencies with a role to play in keeping our communities safe. This helps us to coordinate our various safety initiatives and share information that helps us respond to safety trends more quickly and effectively."
