The SPCA has issued a warning after a dog was saved from a hot car in the nick of time as temperatures soared to more than 49C.
"The reports of dogs being left inside hot cars continue to roll in, despite our very best efforts to educate dog owners of the sometimes-horrific outcomes," the charity said today on social media.
In a recent case, the SPCA said they were called to a vehicle in Christchurch, where a dog was removed "just in time". While temperatures outside the car was around 28C, inside the temperature had reached over 49C.
"The owner had cracked [open] the windows, believing this would make the car cool enough."
In another instance, the SPCA said inspectors were called after a dog was left inside a car with a bowl of water.
"The dog had knocked over the water bowl and was luckily removed from the car by our team," they said.
To ensure their safety, the SPCA advised owners to leave their pets at home, with a friend of family member, or take them outside the car.
