Two men have been arrested and charged with the 2023 gang-related murder of Charles Pongi – in addition to several already charged.

Pongi, 32, was shot on August 5, 2023 at Taurima Reserve in Auckland's Point England. He later died in Auckland Hospital after taking himself there with gunshot wounds.

Police at the time called it an "appalling display of violence".

"More than 70 gang members from the Head Hunters, Rebel MCs, and associates converged on the Taurima Reserve in Pt England on 5 August for an intended brawl," a statement said in 2023.

Four men were convicted and sentenced for the murder of the former Head Hunters member late last year. A 21-year-old man was also set for a re-trial later in the year.

Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin of Auckland City CIB said two more men were arrested in Auckland on Tuesday.

“These two men were identified as part of the Operation Pastel investigation and have jointly been charged with murder over the death of Mr Pongi,” he said.

“We’re pleased to have laid further charges in this investigation.”

A 28-year-old man appeared in Auckland District Court earlier today and has been remanded in custody to appear in the Auckland High Court on February 4.

A 25-year-old man would appear in the Auckland District Court this afternoon, facing an additional charge of presenting a firearm.
