Fire and emergency crews dousing a rubbish fire on SH20 in Auckland.

A lane on Auckland's State Highway 20 blocked following a rubbish fire this afternoon has now reopened.

Police said they were alerted after a rubbish truck spilled its load, which was on fire, on the left westbound lane near the Lambie Dr offramp around 2.17pm.

Smoke from the fire also affected the Lambie Dr offramp, with visibility impacted.

Smoke from the blaze was affecting the offramp and impacting visibility, police said.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1News it received multiple calls to the fire around 2.15pm.

Two crews from Papatoetoe arrived at the scene to find the rubbish fire "had spread to nearby vegetation".

Four fire trucks and a tanker worked to extinguish the blaze, which measured approximately 30x20m.

SH20 was down to one lane while the debris was cleared.

The blaze was the first recorded waste truck fire in Auckland this year, the Auckland Council said.

There were 16 truck fires last year, down from 20 in 2024.
