Raptors in the sky: US fighter jets confirmed for Warbirds over Wanaka

The USAF F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team will be performing on all three days of New Zealand’s Premier Airshow.

One of the world’s most impressive fighter aircraft has been confirmed for a first visit to the country for Warbirds Over Wanaka this Easter.

The USAF F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team will be performing on all three days of the popular air show, which is held every two years and draws crowds of more than 50,000 people.

At a cost of more than $200 million each — the Raptor was the only US-built fighter not sold to other countries, and there were just 183 built since they first entered service in 2005.

The 5th Generation fighter was considered by many to be the best fighter aircraft in the world, said Warbirds Over Wanaka's general manager Ed Taylor.

"This team displays at all the major airs shows in the US and at big military air shows around the world," he said.

"To have them come here says a lot about how well regarded the Wanaka show is globally. This is right up there with the biggest acts we’ve ever secured in the 38 years of our event."

He said it had some of the best stealth abilities of any other comparable fighters and its engines produce more thrust than any other fighter.

Another feature of the Raptor is its ability to achieve Supercruise, being able to go Supersonic without using its afterburners.

The Raptor will be flown at Wanaka by Captain Nick "Laz" Le Tourneau, who was commander and pilot for the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team stationed at the Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Two Raptors will make the trip to New Zealand and will operate out of Christchurch International Airport. Taylor said the Christchurch team had been "instrumental in helping secure the F-22s".

"This is a very special aircraft and Christchurch Airport has gone beyond in making sure the Demo Team requirements can all be met. We couldn't have done it without them," he said.

Warbirds Over Wanaka was being held at Easter (April 3, 4 and 5).
