A man is due to appear in court today after allegedly hitting and assaulting a pedestrian in Nelson, fleeing the scene and later ramming a police car in Marlborough.
Police received a report of a vehicle crashing into a fence and hitting a pedestrian at around 8pm in the Nelson suburb of Atawhai.
The pedestrian was then assaulted, sustaining moderate injuries.
Marlborough area commander Inspector Simon Feltham said police tracked the car involved in the incident, which was sighted "some time later" on State Highway 6 near Okaramio.
"Police signalled the vehicle to pull over, but the offender swerved into the travelling police car behind them," he said.
"The crash blocked the road with both vehicles badly damaged."
The man and the police officer both sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital, where they were recovering, he said.
A 36-year-old man was due to appear in Blenheim District Court today facing charges including wounding with intent, strangulation, common assault, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, taking a bank card for pecuniary advantage, wilful damage and refusing a request for a blood test.
