A man's body has been located at Rotorua's Blue Lake/Lake Tikitapu.

Police said it was contacted at about 10.30pm on Friday to a report of a man who had not returned from a swim.

His body was located a few hours later at about 1am on Saturday.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

On Saturday, police area commander Herby Ngawhika joined kaumātua from Tƫhourangi iwi at the lake to observe tikanga in lifting the tapu off the lake and restoring wairua of the area.

Over the weekend, police warned the public to take extreme care in and around the water after a spate of incidents across New Zealand's rivers, lakes and beaches.

On Saturday, two people died in separate incidents in Akaroa Harbour in Canterbury and the Lower Kaimai area of the Bay of Plenty. A further person remained missing in the Waikato River.

So far this year, there have been 91 drownings across the country - the highest figure in a decade. (Source: 1News)

Another person had been seriously injured after being pulled from the water in the Tasman District, and another was taken to Waitākere Hospital in a moderate condition after a water-related incident in South Piha on Saturday.

On the same day, three people were rescued from Auckland's Karekare Beach after a man fell from a cliff onto rocks and reportedly had broken his leg.

Inspector Andrea McBeth said in a statement that each year, officers see "tragic outcomes" in and around the water.

"Waters around our country have strong and deep currents, that are changeable and unpredictable. If you’re not a strong swimmer with a life jacket, stay where your feet touch the ground and take extra precautions," she said.
