Three people were rescued from Auckland’s Karekare Beach yesterday after a man fell from a cliff onto rocks and broke his leg, the local surf club says.

Emergency services were called at around 11.15am after a group attempted to climb rocks to access Mercer Bay, with one man falling and seriously injuring his leg. Police say two of his friends were also stranded following the incident.

Acting Inspector Eugene Pickett said the police Eagle helicopter quickly located the injured man and the two others.

The man was airlifted to Auckland Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, while Surf Life Saving NZ reached the remaining two men by jet skis and returned them safely to shore.

A spokesperson for Karekare Surf Club told 1News the group had been trying to reach Mercer Bay by climbing the rocks when the incident occurred. Rescue teams were initially alerted after spotting a fisherman in trouble following a fall onto the rocks.

Footage taken from nearby shows a jet ski and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter attending the scene during the rescue operation.

The surf club is reminding the public to take care around coastal areas and to play it safe near the water over summer.
