A driver has been arrested after a 14-year-old girl was hit by a car outside a party in Tauranga last night, with police alleging emergency responders faced aggression while trying to help the critically injured teenager.
Police said the girl was in a serious condition at Starship Hospital after the incident on Kaitemako Rd in Welcome Bay at around 11.30pm on Saturday.
Senior Sergeant Roger Schreuder said a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in the incident.
"Police have arrested the driver, inquiries continue and once concluded, charges are likely," he said in a statement.
"The incident occurred outside of an address where there was a large party involving youths, some became aggressive to police and ambulance staff who were trying to assist the injured teenager. This was extremely disappointing behaviour.
The Serious Crash Unit and the criminal investigation branch attended the scene.
A witness described the party as “out-of-control", SunLive reports.
Hato Hone St John responded with one ambulance, one rapid response unit, and one manager to the scene. The patient was initially transported to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition before being taken to Starship in Auckland.
