Woman dies of injuries days after crash near Whanganui

A woman critically injured in a crash near Whanganui last week has died of her injuries.

Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 3 south of Turakina around 6.05am on January 2.

The woman was taken to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

She died of her injuries on Monday.

"Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time," police said today.

Two others remain in hospital in a critical condition.

Shortly before 6pm, three people were screaming for help outside the flagged area at Tairua Beach.

An earlier crash at the scene damaged he barrier, which then punctured the truck.

Road open, but contractors to remain at Wellington diesel spill

"A diesel road tanker has hit a road barrier, and we estimate up to 4000 litres of fuel has spilt," the fire service said.
