Road open, but contractors to remain at Wellington diesel spill

Firefighters say it will take a few days for contractors to fully clear a major Wellington thoroughfare after 4000 litres of diesel spilled from a truck early this morning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Incident Controller Mike Dombroski said crews were first alerted to the incident at Aotea Quay near the overbridge to Hutt Rd around 3am.

An earlier crash at the scene damaged he barrier, which then punctured the truck.

Dombroski estimated up to 4000 litres of fuel had been spilt.

At its peak, he said there were three pumps, a command unit, a water tanker and a hazmat unit in attendance at the scene.

In an update just before 11am, Senior Station Officer James Gray said contractors would remain at the scene over the next few days, clearing the road.

"Some of the fuel has gone into the harbour and the stormwater drains," he said.

"We are advising the public there may be diesel fumes for the rest of the day from Thorndon Quay to the ferry terminal.

"If anyone has concerns due to the fumes, they should call 111."
