Drone to search for missing tramper near Lake Ōhau

Tuesday 12:28pm
Connor Purvis, 20, has been missing near Lake Ōhau since he intended to climb Mount Huxley on or about December 30.

A large-scale search for missing tramper Connor Purvis is continuing today, focusing on Mt Huxley, the Huxley River South Branch and upper Ahuriri River, police say.

Connor Purvis, 20, had intended to climb Mt Huxley on or about December 30, before descending via the Huxley River South Branch. Concerns were raised when he did not return from the tramp.

Search efforts yesterday focused in the upper South Temple Valley, Mt Huxley and the Huxley River South Branch, both on foot and via helicopter.

Specialists at the scene today included canyoning and drone teams from Wānaka, a Dunedin cliff rescue team, and Land Search and Rescue teams.

Police said helicopter support for searching and logistics were being provided by Heliventures from Ōamaru and The Helicopter Line from Mt Cook.

Yesterday, rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Matt Sheat said: "We ask anyone who has climbed Mt Huxley or has been tramping or hunting in the Huxley River South Branch between December 28 and January 2 to make contact with police if they haven’t already."

"We also want to hear from anyone who may have seen or spoken to Connor in the South Temple, Ahuriri or Huxley valleys in that same timeframe.

"It's a large-scale search over a large area, and the smallest piece of information could make all the difference."
