Katie Miller, wife of White House senior adviser Stephen Miller, prompted a response from a Danish ambassador today after she posted a map of a US flagged Greenland with the caption "SOON".
Trump called repeatedly for US jurisdiction over Greenland during his presidential transition and in the early months of his second term, causing anxiety in both Denmark and Greenland.
“We do need Greenland, absolutely,” Trump himself told The Atlantic in an interview on Sunday.
Danish ambassador to the US, Jesper Møller Sørensen, responded firmly on X to Miller's post.
"Just a friendly reminder about the US and the Kingdom of Denmark."
"We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security. Greenland is already part of NATO."
Greenland possesses natural resources that include oil, gas, and rare earth elements. Denmark is responsible for the autonomous territory’s foreign affairs and defence.
Following Trump's comments, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged the US to "stop the threats".
"It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the US needing to take over Greenland. The US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom.
"I would therefore strongly urge the US stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people, who have very clearly said that they are not for sale."
The prime minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said Trump's comments were "disrespectful".
"When the President of the United States says that ‘we need Greenland’ and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, it’s not just wrong. It’s disrespectful."
