Ambulance involved in Kaipara crash that left two injured, one critical

The damaged ambulance had been taken off the road for repairs.

Two people were injured, one critically, after a vehicle and an ambulance taking a patient to hospital collided in Northland last night.

Emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash on Cove Rd at Waipu at around 7.50pm on Friday.

St John Northland District operations manager Ben Lockie confirmed to 1News an ambulance was involved in the crash.

"Two crew members were on board the ambulance, transporting a patient in a moderate condition from Mangawhai Heads to Whangārei Hospital at the time of the incident."

Two ambulances, one rapid response unit, one first response unit, an operational manager, and a helicopter responded to the scene of the crash, he said.

"One ambulance officer was treated for moderate injuries and transported to Whangārei Hospital. Ambulance staff treated one other patient and transported them to Whangārei Hospital in a critical condition."

The other ambulance officer and the patient was uninjured, with another ambulance crew taking the patient to Whangārei Hospital.

The damaged ambulance had been taken off the road for repairs.

Lockie said St John took the health and safety of its staff "very seriously" and would be assisting police with their investigation.

"Support will be provided to our ambulance staff involved; our thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident."
