Police are investigating after two people were found dead at separate houses on the same property within 12 hours of each other in the western Bay of Plenty.
Officers were first called at around 3pm on New Year's Day to reports a woman had died at an address on Old Coach Rd in Pukehina.
A 50-year-old man was arrested later that afternoon and charged with assault on a person in a family relationship. He was due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.
Early this morning, around 2.10am, police were alerted to a second death at the same property.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said a man was found dead in another house on the site.
"At this stage, his death is being treated as unexplained."
Scene examinations would take place throughout the day to determine what occurred, he said, adding police were not ruling out further arrests or charges.
Two post-mortem examinations would take place in due course.
Wilson said detectives are appealing for information from anyone who visited the Old Coach Road address between 7pm on December 31, and 3am on January 2.
Pukehina is located southeast of Maketu in the Western Bay of Plenty District.
