Three people have been critically injured after a serious crash near Whanganui this morning.
Police said it received reports of the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 3, south of Turakina, at around 6.05am on Friday.
St John said three ambulances, a rapid response unit, two operations managers and one helicopter attended the scene.
"Two patients in a critical condition were transported to to Whanganui by road, and one patient in a critical condition was flown to Wellington Hospital," a St John spokesperson said.
The road had been blocked by the crash with diversions put in place at the intersections of State Highway 3 and Whanganui Rd, as well as State Highway 3 and Union Rd.|
NZTA said the road was closed between Wanganui Rd and Makirikiri Rd.
"Follow the directions of emergency services on site," an NZTA spokesperson said.
