Person dies after being swept away by waves off Piha

A person has died after being swept away by waves off Piha Beach west of Auckland this afternoon.

Police said they were called to the scene around 12.30pm following a report of a person washed away by waves.

The Police Eagle helicopter was deployed to help locate the person.

"Sadly, they were located and confirmed deceased around 1.20pm," a police spokesperson said.

"Their death will be referred to the coroner."
