A cat missing after a break-in at the SPCA's Nelson centre in February has been found – just in time for Christmas.

Nelson SPCA said staff were "horrified" when they arrived at work on the morning of February 17 to find all of the cat cages were open with the animals roaming free.

Staff found areas in the fences and cages that had been cut through.

"There must have been some wirecutters and we actually found a leftover tool as well, that they'd obviously tried to pry open some of these cage fronts."

CCTV showed the person came onto the property before sunset on February 16, staying for hours, before leaving and returning again in the early hours of the morning.

Three animals went missing following the incident. While two dogs were later found by members of the public, Boris the cat was nowhere to be seen.

Then on Monday, Nelson SPCA said they received a call from a neighbour of the centre that a "chatty black cat had 'waltzed into [their] house like he owned the place two days ago' and hadn't left yet".

"We were immediately hopeful – and overjoyed to discover that he was, in fact, Boris! After 307 days on the lam, we're overjoyed to have him back," the SPCA said yesterday on social media.

"While we aren't sure what he's been up to for most of the year, he obviously knew the holidays were coming up, and returned just in time to celebrate!

"A massive thank you to the community members who made this reunion happen."
