Structures lost, one injured as fast-moving fire rages near Hastings

The fire, reported just before 1.30pm on Tuesday, was located between the Fernhill township and the Ngaruroro River Bridge on State Highway 50.

A fast-moving vegetation fire on the outskirts of Hastings has destroyed multiple structures, injured one person, and forced evacuations as strong winds fuel the blaze.

The fire, reported just before 1.30pm on Tuesday, was located between the Fernhill township and the Ngaruroro River Bridge on State Highway 50.

Fire and Emergency NZ said seven pumps, 11 tankers, and four support vehicles were present at the scene.

Incident Controller assistant commander Warwick LeQuesne said multiple structures had been destroyed and all residents living around the Farmhouse Lodge had been accounted for.

"Crews are focusing on protecting remaining structures. At present it is too windy for helicopters to operate safely."

Fire and Emergency NZ said earlier: "Please avoid the area, watch for diversions, and if you are affected by the smoke stay inside with doors and windows closed to minimise exposure."

St John said one person had been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a serious condition.

Police said a section of State Highway 50 had been closed due to smoke compromising visibility.

"At this stage, no injuries have been reported, however the road is expected to remain closed for some time due to smoke compromising visibility."
