Firefighters say they are close to containing a fast-moving vegetation fire on the outskirts of Hastings which destroyed one home and damaged another, injured one person, and forced evacuations, but they warn it is "not yet under control".
The fire, reported just before 1.30pm on Tuesday, was located between the Fernhill township and the Ngaruroro River Bridge on State Highway 50.
Fire and Emergency NZ said there were 18 fire crews battling the six-hectare blaze, including urban and rural firefighters.
Helicopters had been unable to assist firefighting efforts, with wind speeds in the area reaching up to 90km/h.
Assistant Commander Jason Hill said one dwelling had been destroyed and another damaged.
"There are multiple structures in the area and some have been lost, but those are not thought to be residences."
Firefighters have worked hard to prevent further damage to structures and will be working into the night, he added.
Evacuated residents were being supported by Hawke's Bay Civil Defence.
Fire and Emergency NZ said earlier: "Please avoid the area, watch for diversions, and if you are affected by the smoke stay inside with doors and windows closed to minimise exposure."
St John said one person had been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a serious condition.
Police said a section of State Highway 50 would remain closed overnight.
"Police continue to advise the public to avoid the area, and motorists should take alternative routes and expect delays."
