National Party deputy leader Nicola Willis has announced she will stand as a list-only candidate at the next election.
Since contesting her first election in 2017, Willis has never held an electorate seat, twice losing to Grant Robertson in Central Wellington. In 2023, she failed to unseat Greg O'Connor from the Ōhāriu seat.
Willis is currently number two on National's list. She is deputy leader of the party and currently serving as Finance Minister.
“I am honoured to have the support of the National Party Board to campaign across New Zealand to help re-elect a National Government focused on fixing the basics and building the future,” Willis said in a statement this morning.
“With the economy recovering, exports at a record high and a new planning system on the way New Zealand is in safe hands under a National Government.
“I’m looking forward to supporting Christopher Luxon and National MPs and candidates around NZ to campaign for and win the Party Vote at next year’s General Election.”
The Wellington region is losing an electorate at next year's election, with Ōhāriu, Mana and Ōtaki being replaced with two new electorates named Kenepuru and Kapiti.
Wellington Central is being renamed Wellington North, and Rongotai is now Wellington Bays.
