New Zealand strikes free trade deal with India, 1News understands

New Zealand has struck a free trade deal with India, 1News understands.

It comes after negotiations were launched in March.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon visited India in April, and Trade Minister Todd McClay has since made several trips.

During the election, a free trade agreement with India was one of Luxon's campaign promises.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, by the end of 2024, total trade between India and New Zealand amounted to $3.14 billion.

New Zealand currently exports $718 million to India.

Previously attempts to secure a FTA with India have stumbled over dairy.
