Three arrests after courier van packed with Christmas gifts stolen

Police said the theft of the van, full of packages destined for homes across the region, was reported on Friday.

Three men have been arrested in Canterbury after a courier van packed with parcels just ahead of Christmas was stolen.

Police said the theft of the van — full of packages destined for homes across the region — was reported on Friday.

Acting Sergeant Daniel Ingram said police received multiple calls from Birdlings Flat residents about men carrying courier packages.

Officers quickly responded and spotted a vehicle leaving the area. It later attempted to hide on a rural roadside.

"The vehicle was located a short time later following further information provided by members of the public, however the three men had fled on foot," Ingram said.

Police deployed the Delta unit and, with help from a local farmer and their technology, tracked down the trio nearby.

All three were arrested and charged with theft and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. They would appear in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday.

"Despite the Grinches trying to steal Christmas, the majority of the packages were recovered and returned to the courier company for delivery," Ingram said.
