Heavily armed police arrested seven men in Sydney's south-west yesterday after receiving information that a "violent act was possibly being planned".

Images from the scene showed officers in camouflage with guns pinning the group of men to the ground and handcuffing them.

The dramatic incident unfolded on the corner of George and Campbell streets in the suburb of Liverpool, just across the road from a busy Westfield shopping centre.

Police had not identified any connection to Sunday's horrific shooting at Bondi Beach, where gunmen killed 15 people in an Islamic-state-inspired terrorist attack targeting a Jewish celebration.

According to New South Wales police, tactical officers had responded to information received that a "violent act was possibly being planned".

"Police subsequently intercepted two cars as part of the investigation," police said.

"As investigations continue, seven men are assisting police with their inquiries."

Other footage from the scene showed a vehicle with what appeared to be damage from a crash.

A man was seen on a stretcher with a bloodied face and bandages around his face.
