Hamilton homicide: Scene examination underway at yacht club toilets

Police at the scene in Hamilton last night.

Scene examinations are underway at a property and the toilet block of a yacht club following the death of a man in Hamilton last night.

Police were called to a property on Lake Cres around 6.15pm on Thursday following reports a man had been injured.

The victim died at the scene and a homicide probe was launched.

A second person was found with a serious arm injury, police said yesterday. They were taken to Waikato Hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.

Detective Inspector Daryl Smith today said scene examinations were being carried out at two locations.

"We have officers working at the Lake Cres address, and also at a second location of interest, several hundred metres away – the toilet block at the yacht club," he said.

Smith said police believe those involved had travelled on foot between the two locations.

"We would encourage anyone who may have seen anything in the area to contact us.

"We know this will be an unsettling time for those in our community that such violence occurred in a public place. I can reassure people we are working hard to hold people to account."

Police urged anyone with information to contact police on 105 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Hamilton Mayor Tim Macindoe said the incident was "awful and distressing for all involved".

"While it is a police matter and is currently under investigation, [Hamilton City] Council is closely monitoring the situation, and is committed to working in partnership with police, community groups, and central government, to improve safety in our city."
