Police close DOC tracks as search for double homicide suspect continues

Mitchell Cole.

Two major Department of Conservation tracks have been closed as police continue the search for Mitchell Cole, 29, who is wanted in connection with the deaths of two people at a rural Ruatiti property last week.

Police said an investigation began after the two victims were found at a rural property on Saturday afternoon.

Stuff has reported the victims were Cole's father and stepmother.

Officers say Cole was considered dangerous and have urged the public not to approach him.

"If you see Cole, please do not approach him, but instead call 111 immediately."

Bouterey described the search area as “very remote", with numerous huts, lodges, and camps scattered throughout the region.

"Police’s appeal to the public is for anyone who has a hut or lodge in the wider Ruatiti area to please get in touch with us via 105," he said.

"Also, if you have CCTV footage covering roads in the area and have not yet spoken to police, please let us know."

Police are looking to identify the owner of this quad bike and trailer.

Hunters have been asked to stay out of the search zone for now. The Maungapurua and Kaiwhakauka Tracks were closed for "health and safety reasons", which 1News understands is due to the ongoing manhunt.

Police are also seeking information about a quad bike and trailer found in the area.

"They are currently parked on Murumuru Rd in an area known locally as the airstrip," Bouterey said.

"If this quad and trailer are yours, or you know who they belong to, please tell us."
