Residents asked to check for 'evidence' in Rotorua man's homicide

Police investigating the homicide of a man who died after his vehicle collided with a tree in Rotorua last week are urging nearby residents to check for "possible evidence".

Officers were called to Ford Rd just before 8.30pm on Friday after reports that a vehicle had hit a tree.

Nicholas Patrick Mitchell, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was found with critical injuries.

The 37-year-old died of his injuries a short time later.

Detective Inspector Lew Warner last week said initial inquiries suggested his injuries were "not consistent with a crash".

Senior Sergeant Mark Van Kempen today asked residents on and near Ford Rd to check their properties for possible evidence.

"It’s possible the offender discarded clothing, weapons, or other items while fleeing the scene," he said.

Van Kempen urged residents to check their yards and fencelines.

"If you find something that’s out of place, please leave it alone and contact police."

Police, supported by the Armed Offenders Squad, carried out search warrants on Ford Rd last night and this morning.

"We’re pursuing a number of leads and would like to hear from anyone who could help us."

Van Kempen said police also continued to seek information on a white Toyota Hiace van, registration DFR734, on Ford Road or the surrounding areas on the night of Mitchell's death.

"If you have information that can help, please speak with us."
