Search continues for man over Ruatiti double homicide

Police are continuing to search for a 29-year-old man who reportedly killed his dad and stepmother in rural Ruatiti.

On Sunday, police said an investigation was launched after the two victims were located at the rural property on Saturday afternoon.

Ruatiti is located near the Whanganui National Park, around 21km southwest of Waimarino (National Park).

Mitchell Cole, 29, was named as a person of interest being sought over the deaths, reported by Stuff to be his father and stepmother.

Central District Commander Superintendent Dion Bennett said Cole was believed to be in the Ruatiti area and should not be approached if seen.

"Police have concerns for Cole, and we also want to speak to him in relation to our ongoing inquiries," he said.

"If you see him, please call 111 immediately."

Ruatiti is located near the Whanganui National Park, around 21km southwest of Waimarino (National Park).

Additional officers would remain in the Ruatiti area for reassurance patrols, and to assist the investigation.

"Police will pursue every lead available to us in relation to this investigation and are working to locate Cole as quickly as possible," Bennett said.

A warrant for his arrest has also been issued, for unlawful possession of firearms.
