A heroic bystander has wrestled a rifle from an alleged gunman in dramatic footage captured during the Bondi Beach shooting.

Emergency services were called to Campbell Parade in Sydney's east at around 6.45pm (local time) after reports of shots being fired at the popular tourist location.

Police have confirmed 12 people were killed, including one of the alleged shooters, and 29 injured in the shooting. A second shooter was in critical condition.

Extraordinary footage obtained by 9News showed a bystander moving cautiously through the carpark, crouching behind a parked silver car.

Once close enough, the bystander lunges at the gunman, wrapping his arms around him and wrestling with him until he pries the rifle from the shooter’s hands.

He then took hold of the weapon and pointed it at the gunman, who retreated toward the car park bridge overpass, where a second gunman was believed to stationed.

Other videos posted to social media appear to show two gunmen standing on a footbridge connecting Campbell Parade to the Bondi Pavilion, firing shots into a crowd below. Footage also shows people taking cover behind parked cars as shots continue to ring out.

Police have not yet confirmed the target or nature of the shooting. A Chanukah by the Sea event was scheduled to take place at a nearby playground from 5pm and had already begun. Sunday marked the first day of Chanukah, also known as Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish festival of lights.
