Police are seeking a person of interest in relation to a double homicide in Ruatiti in the central North Island over the weekend.

He has been named as 29-year-old Mitchell Cole.

Yesterday, police said an investigation was launched after the two victims were located at the rural property on Saturday afternoon.

Ruatiti is located near the Whanganui National Park, around 21km southwest of Waimarino (National Park).

Today, central district commander Superintendent Dion Bennett said it is believed Cole is in the Ruatiti area, and should not be approached.

"If you see him, please call 111 immediately," Bennett said.

A scene examination is still underway at the property, which was described as large. A police eagle helicopter was also being used to assist staff on ground.

Bennett said: "I know this event will be concerning for many in our community."

"Police will be carrying out reassurance patrols as we work as quickly as possible to locate those involved."

Additional police remain in the Ruatiti area to assist the investigation.

"I urge anyone who has information that may help us to contact police as soon as possible.

"If you see Mitchell Cole, call 111 straight away."

Non-urgent information about what happened could also be provided using 105 by phone or online, or anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
