Police are looking for a missing swimmer in Auckland who failed to resurface after falling into a hole while in waist-deep water.
Emergency services were called to Lake Wainamu in Bethells Beach at around 6.10pm.
Senior Sergeant Jon Winthrop said a 23-year-old man was in waist-deep water with three friends at the time of the incident.
“He has taken a few more steps before falling into a hole and has not resurfaced,” Winthrop said.
Police, lifeguards, and the eagle helicopter were all called to the scene to search for the missing swimmer.
"Unfortunately, the swimmer remains unaccounted for."
Winthrop said the police dive squad would be deployed to the lake today.
“Our efforts are focused on locating the swimmer, and this will continue across the day," Winthrop said.
“We acknowledge the support of all agencies that have been involved so far.
“I know the swimmer’s friends are quite shaken up by the events that unfolded very quickly last night, and we are ensuring there is support in place for them.”
