Road closed, one injured after truck hits building in Lower Hutt

One person is seriously injured after a truck crashed into a building in Lower Hutt this morning.

A police spokesperson said Rutherford Str was closed between Melling Link and Connolly Street following the single-vehicle crash reported to emergency services about 5.30am.

"One person is reported to have serious injuries," they said.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said firefighters were called by police to reports of truck hitting a building in Hutt Central.

It sent two rescue trucks, and one pumping truck from Avalon, Seaview, Johnsonville stations.

Firefighters extricated the driver of the vehicle, and were now working on leaving the scene with police. They are currently still in attendance.

Footage taken from the scene by 1News showed emergency services including Fire and Emergency NZ and police officers at the scene next to a fuel truck.

Police said the road was expected to be closed for some time, and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Heading into Lower Hutt, there was no left turn off the Melling Bridge.
