Dramatic scenes unfolded near a Melbourne police station after a road rage incident led to a vehicle being chased and rammed on the wrong side of the road, resulting in a person being stabbed.

According to 9News, the chaotic incident kicked off in the city's north at around 5pm, when emergency services received multiple calls from people witnessing what appeared to be a road rage incident.

A Kia appeared to be chasing a Volkswagen Golf, both cars driving on the wrong side of the road. One of the vehicles collided with another, and both came to a stop in the middle of the intersection.

A man then emerged from one of the vehicles and was allegedly stabbed in the upper arm with what was believed to be a kitchen knife. He was left with a deep cut and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

From a nearby police station, officers saw the ordeal unfold, flooding outside to control the incident.

Describing the incident, Detective Sergeant Jess Graham said it appeared the Kia was chasing the Volkswagen.

"It's disgusting, it's brazen. They didn't care they were on the wrong side of the road," Graham said.

"There were people everywhere, cars everywhere. They didn't care."

A 15-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, and a 24-year-old man were arrested at the scene but were released pending further enquiries.

Police alleged multiple people fled the scene before officers arrived, and the investigation remains ongoing.

"We're trying to determine which car they were all in, who did the stabbing, what their involvement is," Graham said.

"The community's been fantastic. The people involved? Not so much."
