A woman has died and a man critically injured after a shark attack off a NSW beach this morning.
Emergency services were called to a beach at Crowdy Bay north of Newcastle at around 6.30am (local time).
NSW Police said despite the efforts of witnesses and paramedics, the woman, believed to be in her 20s, died at the scene.
She was yet to be formally identified.

A man, believed to be of similar age, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
The beach has been closed, with experts working to determine the species of shark involved in the attack.
