Police are hunting for an attacker after a woman was seriously assaulted in her Whangārei home early this morning.

Officers were called to Murdoch Cres in the suburb of Raumanga just after midnight on Tuesday to reports of a person injured.

Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said a woman had been "seriously assaulted" in her home.

St John said one ambulance responded to the incident, with a patient assessed at the scene and taken to Northland Base Hospital in moderate condition.

Inquiries were underway to identify and locate the person responsible, Pilmer said.

"Police are focused on identifying this person and understanding exactly what has taken place."

A scene guard was in place at the house and nearby residents could expect an increased police presence.

Pilmer said police were appealing for any witnesses who may have information to come forward.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, including any vehicles, in the Murdoch Crescent area between 4pm and 12am yesterday.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen any vehicle leaving the area at speed between 11.30pm and 12am last night."

Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
