A hunt is underway for a man who stole a car with a baby asleep inside from a supermarket car park.

Police believe the thief waited for the driver to enter the store before jumping into the red Volkswagen and reversing out of the car park in Shepparton, northeast of Melbourne, about 2pm on November 14.

CCTV footage showed the offender stopping the car shortly after, having discovering the sleeping baby inside.

He was captured on camera picking up the baby before placing it in a box in the car park.
