One of three young children who died following a Manawatū house fire over the weekend was aged just one, police say.

Inspector Ross Grantham said it was "unimaginable how the horror and the heartache that this family are going through so it’s great for the community to support them".

He confirmed that the man – the children's father – was found in the house but did not suffer burns.

More than 200 schools, ECEs on alert over asbestos sand fears

Fears over asbestos-contaminated sand have led to the closure of at least eight schools today after a list of recalled products grew over the weekend.

The recall expanded on Saturday after multiple products sold at Kmart were added to a list of brands where asbestos had been detected in testing.

A Ministry of Education spokesperson said approximately 150 school and 90 early learning services had contacted officials over the issue by 2pm on Sunday.

MetService is forecasting a warm week with humid nights ahead, while a front moving toward the country is expected to bring heavy gales and strong winds.

Higher than average temperatures were recorded in the North Island overnight, with Tauranga hitting 18C at 6am, and Whangārei and Kaitāia both recording 16C.

"Overnight temperatures reach into the mid and high teens, and daytime temperatures reach well into the 20s," MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said.
